HOOKING, OSTENTATIOUS, and ILLUSTRIOUS
Updated: Jul 29, 2019
“Ladies and gents, this is the moment you’ve waited for” …
A proper review of the newly released movie, The Greatest Showman! Critics tore this movie apart, and I’m here to begin to stitch its reputation back together! In a world driven by so much negativity, The Greatest Showman delivered hope, light, and dignity!
This past Saturday, December 23, was my sister’s birthday! And on that day, each year, she gets to pick whatever we do. With much excitement and anticipation, she wanted to see The Greatest Showman. Of course, we all went along with what she wanted, but honestly I had no prior expectations! See, I had just recently, (meaning about two weeks ago), heard about The Greatest Showman entirely. I was at the dentist, lying in those recliner chairs, and they had the news on. Zendaya (Anne, the acrobat girl) was being interviewed on the Today show about her role in the movie. I thought, “What the heck is The Greatest Showman?”, and moved on with my day; I’m not even sure if I ever saw the trailer.
From the first song in the opening scene, I knew I was going to love this movie, and I hope you’ll feel the same!
In Songwriting 101, it’s taught that a hook in necessary for a song to have any success. If that’s the case, then the writers of The Greatest Showman definitely would have gotten an A in that class! Besides the underlying musical theme (created by using similar chord progressions), each song is completely unique, which constantly left a smile on my face! With each second of every song, my heart beat faster, and my excitement grew! I was intrigued by the amount of sound effects, instruments, contemporary melodies, and form of each tune! So intrigued that I have already learned a couple songs on the piano, and listened to the soundtrack back-to-back at work! I tell you, these songs are unforgettable! I believe this is one of the first musical-type movies that has featured so much contemporary music, which I happen to like the most! The lyrics were cleverly placed, understandable, and told a story! If I could use only one word to describe the music, it would be Captivating!
Some critics mentioned the words “tone-deaf” in their review. I don’t fully disagree. There were some questionable pitches, but to me that simply shows that even those in Hollywood cannot be deemed as perfect. I suggest you get your ears checked before you critique someone who is much more musically inclined than you probably ever will be!
Secondly, I read roughly 12-15 reviews, and most of them mentioned the plot and the background biography. What’s comical to me, is that most critics disliked that the movie was not a true biography of P.T. Barnum, and I’m still laughing! A. The Greatest Showman never once described themselves as a factual movie. Simply, that they were telling the tale of P.T. Barnum and how the Circus came to be.
Here is the description via Google:
“Inspired by the imagination of P. T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.”
The directors of this movie wanted to bring hope and imagination back into our lives! They wanted to give us the feeling that you can do anything you set your mind to, no matter what people say nor where you came from. I left the theater with my chin high, and my hopes even higher! I laugh that critics are sooooo against things that are semi-truthful, and are for things that have no platform of truth whatsoever: Do Politics ring a bell? B. If they were going to tell the whole biography of P.T. Barnum, the movie would’ve most likely been longer, and might I add, extremely bland!
I think the writers of the movie carefully chose what to include, and did a fantastic job at that! If instead they decided to showcase all the details of his life, I feel like the history of the circus would have been suffocated, and played down a tad! 146 years, is something we should be appreciating, celebrating, and remembering! The movie also left me utterly curious! Curious, to the point, that I did my own research to find out the complete story, and I don’t think I’m the only one! If you give someone a bit of mystery, normally, as humans, finding the truth is what we crave.
Thirdly, I also want to commend the casting director(s) for their good picks. Many times, I see movies that seem to have flawless actors and actresses, leaving me judging myself. Now, I don’t have poor self esteem, but more often than not I become envious of their lives. This was not the case with The Greatest Showman! I believe they truly chose individuals who had an equal balance of talent and looks! Of course, of course, they had to chose some attractive people, but I still think talent played a vast role in their decision!
Fourthly, The Greatest Showman portrayed some amazing messages to send to the growing generations today! One, self love is more important than outside approval! And two, sometimes fame and money, don’t amount to happiness. Like I said in the beginning, this world can be so negative, but if we begin to teach the young how to flourish with positivity, a change is possible! This movie showcased individuals who overcame what they thought they needed, and learned to be content and joyful in who they are and with what they have! This movie leaves you with the hope that you are the master of your fate.
In conclusion, I would most definitely recommend The Greatest Showman to anyone, especially families! With it being rated PG, I can honestly say IT IS family friendly. I believe this movie is intensely creative, amusing, wishful, and whimsical! If you have any doubt whether or not to see this movie, I would stop reading reviews, and go make up your own mind! If you like musicals, and films that leave you dreaming, you will NOT be disappointed! I may even see it for a second time!
